Last summer I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop called Rivers to Reefs with the GA Aquarium where we explored the waterways from Atlanta to the coast of Georgia. Our week-long tour included a visit to Sapelo Island where we met several well known people who inspired us! Mrs. Lula @Lula'a Kitchen, Mrs. Yvonne Grover Master Basket Weaver & educator @Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the late Cornelia Bailey known as the historian, educator from Hog Hammock, and author of "God, Dr. Buzzard and the Bolito Man" & more. I'm so happy to see Mrs. Grovner has agreed to come to Atlanta & teach her skills!!!
This workshop is designed to teach people of all abilities. You will learn how to weave a sweet grass basket to take home with you. Mrs. Yvonne Grovner is a world renowned basket weaver from Sapelo Island Georgia who was taught by the Historian & National Treasure Allen Green. They have crafted thousands of beautiful baskets dispersed all over the world including several museums. They are considered Gullah-Geechees & are direct descendants from Sierra Leone West Africans who worked on coastal plantations.
Learn to create a work of art in less than 3 hours & preserve a tradition.
All materials will be provided for you.
